A Haunting Facebook Status

Maybe I'm overreacting, but I just saw a facebook status update that is still haunting me.  It said, "Two years ago today, god blessed us with our 3rd, and FINAL, miracle. Happy Birthday to the most beautiful baby girl ever!"

Is it just me, or is it kind of sick to put "FINAL" in all caps like that?  First you're thanking God for this awesome blessing,of a beautiful healthy child, and then you're telling Him, "But I'll take over from here.  We're done trusting in your judgement for our family."  And then you're telling your daughter, "Yeah, you were an awesome blessing, but we sure don't want anymore like you!"

It just struck me deeply this morning and I had to get my thoughts out because it's still resonating...

  1. Ugh. Hate it. I hope Leo is not my 3rd and final blessing!

  2. Yep. Sounds bizarre and totally unappreciative and just down right rigid.

    No like!

Is there a button for that?

  3. That's too bad. That mentality is so pervasive though isn't it? We want what we want when we want it. Ugh.

  4. Who would want to limit the number of miracles they get in life?

  5. Um, yuck. I think you are not overreacting. I saw this recently, from a couple who is adopting. A very devout Christian couple, but it made me sad and made my logical brain hurt:

"After the birth of [our] fourth boy, [we] decided that it was not in God’s plan to have a naturally born daughter."

Really, you decided that was God's plan? Sigh….

  6. That bothers me, too.

I can't really say that I wouldn't have been like that, though, had I not experienced IF.

I agree with Hebrews. Who would want to limit the number of miracles they get it life? ;-)

I have heard lots of people talk that way. "This is our last child." "We're done after this one." All of it makes me shudder when I hear it now.

  7. I totally get that at some point everyone is "done" having kids, or at least wants to be. But it was that "FINAL" in all-caps that really haunted me. It almost felt like a veiled insult to her poor daughter!

  8. Oh my goodness! It seems that people just post and don't think about what they are actually saying. This just makes me sad!

  9. My NFP using Catholic friend said they are done having kids. Between you and me, it always makes me a bit sad to hear that like nothing exciting and new will ever happen to them again.

  10. Ugh. Ya know, even as a clueless teen (even before my teens) who was no good with little kids, had no Catholic theology training, and was pretty much agnostic, I always found it so sad to sterilize, to close ALL doors to a new life. I felt like kids were a joyful and exciting part of marriage (not that people have to have large families... just that being open to life is a wonderful thing). So I just can't relate... I've never related... to this, "My child is a gift, but now I am shutting the door on more gifts" mentality.

  12. Just really sick! I think I would have to unfriend or block from news feed- just very disturbing.
